April 27, 2026 Community Message
Dear Modern Campus web editors,
The Department of Justice has extended the deadline for the new ADA Title II digital accessibility requirements by one year, to April 26, 2027. While this provides additional time, it does not change the importance of the work already underway—or the need to continue making steady progress.
Independent of the federal deadlines, we are moving forward with our current plans and expectations for Modern Campus sites. Our goal remains the same: to ensure all university websites are accessible, modern, and aligned with the new templates and standards as soon as possible.
To maintain momentum and provide clarity, we are establishing the following internal milestones:
- By June 30, 2026: All sites intending to remain live on stonybrook.edu in 2027 must request a new site shell.
- By August 15, 2026: All sites must be cut over and live in the new environment.
- By January 15, 2027: All sites remaining in the old environment will be taken offline.
- By February 15, 2027: All links must be updated to eliminate 404 errors and reduce reliance on unnecessary 301/302 redirects.
- By April 15, 2027: The majority of redirects will be retired. Select high-traffic, mission-critical redirects may be evaluated and retained as needed.
We will continue sharing details on these deadlines and how to meet them as each milestone approaches.
If you have not yet started your transition, we strongly encourage you to begin now. If you are already in progress, please continue moving forward with your current timeline.
While earlier notice of the deadline extension would have allowed us to provide even more components, snippets, and formatting options upfront, our focus remains on continuing to enhance the new templates over time. We are committed to actively delivering new features, supporting help tickets, holding open office hours, and running trainings and demos to share updates and strengthen best practices for usability and accessibility compliance for the foreseeable future.
Please note: While the extended deadline applies to most of the University’s websites, it does not apply to entities that receive federal financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. At this time, Stony Brook Medicine remains subject to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, with a compliance deadline of May 11, 2026.
Additional details, resources, and support options regarding the Modern Campus CMS
site migration project are available on our MARCOM CMS Support site. Questions regarding
Title II and other digital accessibility should be directed to the Office of Equity
and Access at oea@stonybrook.edu.
Thank you for your continued partnership in making Stony Brook’s web presence accessible
to all.
