Job Role

The primary responsibility of Summer Housing Assistants (SHA) is to support the Campus Residences’ staff as well as conference/summer guests to make sure that all guests’ housing needs are met. Summer Housing Assistants will have the opportunity to work with different populations such as youth and adult groups. The SHA’s main duties are to prepare and organize various elements of housing for conference groups as well as provide quality customer service.

Summer Housing Assistant responsibilities include the following:

  • Participate in overnight duty rotation from 7pm to 8:30am and 24 hour duty on weekends and holidays
  • Support Campus Residence staff with check ins and check outs from residential communities
  • Complete building/room preparation 
  • Provide excellent customer service to conference guests and residents
  • Serve as primary point of contact for guests/participants in emergency situations
  • Assigned administrative tasks as applicable

Some SHAs will have the opportunity to work for additional hourly pay throughout the summer to perform specific tasks such as:

  • Inventorying linens, laundering, and sorting linens, setting up spaces, turning over spaces once guests have departed, and packaging linens at the end of the summer.
  • Work scheduled shifts in a Community Area Office between the hours of 8AM-7PM Monday-Friday.

Summer Housing Assistants looking to work for additional pay must be eligible for student payroll and will only be approved for minimal other commitments outside of their SHA role.


Eligibility

  • Applicants must be a current Stony Brook University student and enrolled in Summer 2024 or Fall 2024 classes. 
  • Applicants must have a semesterly and cumulative 2.50 GPA at the time of application.
  • Applicants must be in good conduct standing. 
  • Applicants must be able to work for the entire duration of the summer. The summer timeline runs from May 20 - August 20, 2024.
  • Applicants must be available for an individual interview, typically scheduled in March/April.
  • Applicants must attend one of the information sessions in full below in order to apply for the SHA position.

How to Apply:

  • Students applying to be a 2024 Summer Housing Assistant are required to attend a mandatory information session in order to gain a thorough understanding of the application and selection process, as well as job responsibilities.

  • Students who attend an information session will receive an email 24 hours after the informational session you attended with the link to the SHA application and how to apply. 
  • The deadline to submit the application is February 7, 2024, at 11:59 pm. References are due by February 13, 2024 at 11:59 pm. Once the application deadline has passed, all applicants will be notified about the next steps in the process.
