New Student - Fall Admit Housing Application Information
2023-2024 Housing Application
APPLICATION AVAILABLE - APRIL 3, 11AM
NEW FIRST YEAR APPLICATION DEADLINE - JUNE 22, 5PM
NEW GRADUATE AND TRANSFER APPLICATION DEADLINE - JUNE 29, 5PM
Students who do not complete the process by the deadline will not have on-campus housing.
This is a two semester commitment, Fall and Spring.
Is there a housing deposit? When is the deadline to deposit by?
There is a $200 housing deposit that students pay in SOLAR. Students participating in EOP do not need to pay a housing deposit.
New Undergraduate deposits will not be accepted after 11:59pm on May 31. If you miss the deposit deadline, you should join the on-campus housing waitlist in the housing portal.
-
- New first years who deposit by May 1 are prioritized for on campus housing.
- New graduate students who deposit by May 15 are prioritized for on campus housing.
- New transfers are not guaranteed on campus housing. Some spaces are held in our continuing student areas to house transfers and additional spaces will be granted based on cancellations of continuing students if space permits.
First year and graduate students can still deposit after the deadline as long as the link in SOLAR is still available, but will only receive an assignment if space permits. If space does not permit, the $200 will be credited in full. The deposit link may be turned off at any point after the priority deadline when we believe we have reached full capacity. You can see instructions on where to find the deposit payment in our Office of Undergraduate Admissions youtube video:
Watch How to Pay Your Deposit on YouTube!
If you cancel by July 31, we will credit $100 of your $200 deposit back to your student account. Please review the Financial Liability agreement for important cancellation and application termination information.
What will the application consist of?
-
- Agreeing to the Terms of Occupancy, Financial Liability, and COVID-19 related expectations

Where will I live?
- New First Year students are placed into Undergraduate Colleges that will determine which of our three first year communities (H, Mendelsohn, and Roosevelt) they will live in. All first years should expect to live in a double occupancy corridor style room.
- Students participating in WISE or Scholars program are given an Undergraduate College and live in a designated building based on their WISE or Scholars designation AND their Undergraduate College.
- Honors College and Simons STEM Scholars participants are housed in Yang Hall.
- Students participating in Gender Inclusive Housing are housed in the GIH Community in Benedict South regardless of your UGC, Scholars, Honors, or WISE designation.
When can I select a room assignment?
First Year students select a space after the start selection date based on their Undergraduate College and finish a selection no later than Thursday, June 22 at 5pm:

These staggered selection times do not impact what is available to you at your start time. The staggered times are used to assist with the amount of users in the portal selecting at a given time.
What spaces can I select?
- You can only select a space in your program designation (UGC, Scholars, Honors, and/or
WISE).
-
- Scholars and WISE participants are given a UGC designation which will determine which of the three first year communities they can select a space in.
-
- You will only select a space for yourself in this process.
When do I move into my space?New first year students will move into their assigned space on August 21 or 22 in order to attend New Student Week of Welcome.
What is Temporary Tripling of residents?
If the demand for Campus Housing exceeds capacity, it means some new undergraduates will be assigned to a temporarily tripled room during their first year, which is a double room assigned to three students. At this time we anticipate minimal tripling of new first year residents. If you are in a temporary triple, you will receive a 15% reduction in your room rate. We will de-triple on a space available basis. We will determine shortly after the priority deposit deadline of May 1 if we need to implement temporary triples and to what extent.
Prior to the start of the fall semester: We will detriple on a space available basis as cancellations come in up until August 18. We will reassign the person in the "-3" bedspace to an available space nearby and notify them of the reassignment.
Where will I live?
New Graduate students are housed primarily in Chapin and Schomburg Apartments. There are limited designated spaces in West Apartments B and E for graduate students.
When can I select a room assignment?
New Graduate and Family agreement holders select a space between June 13 11am and June 29 at 5pm. If there is high graduate demand, randomized selection start times will be assigned for the week of June 13. If you deposited by the priority May 15 deadline but are not able to access our system due to your NetID log in not being activated until after June 29, you will be administratively assigned a space.
Selections can only be made between 11am-9:59pm after your selection start date. All graduate students must select a space by June 29 at 5pm.
What spaces can I select?
New Graduate Students may select space from among Chapin, Schomburg, and designated West Apartments spaces for graduate students. West Campus Graduate students who cannot select a space at West Campus due to high demand can indicate interest in being housed at Southampton Campus.
You will only select a space for yourself in this process.
We encourage those that intend to renew their housing agreement for multiple years for the full 12-months to select a space in Chapin E, F, I or Schomburg. These buildings will remain active for 12-month agreements as not all buildings or units in Chapin will be available for summer 2024 housing.
We anticipate Chapin J & D going offline for renovations in summer 2024. If you anticipate a need for summer housing in 2024 we recommend you select a space NOT in Chapin J or D to minimize your moves.
When do I move into my space?
New Graduate students may move in between August 1 - 27 between 9am-4:30pm. If you need to arrive after 4:30pm, contact your area office closer to your arrival date to coordinate a late check in between 8pm-9pm that same day. We recommend avoiding weekend move-ins as our staff is limited to an on-call capacity. If you need to arrive earlier based on your program or need, we will collect additional information in the application and you will be administratively placed.
The university will coordinate bus arrivals from JFK on certain dates in August. Those dates are not finalized at this time. Please wait to book your flight until you know those dates if you want to use that transportation to campus service. You will be able to adjust your arrival date until June 29.
What are my housing options if I am a new graduate student who missed the deposit deadline? We have reached our capacity for graduate housing spaces and are no longer accepting deposits.
Feel free to join the housing waitlist through the housing portal to potentially receive an offer if spaces become available. However, please be aware that we cannot provide an estimate of when and if offers might be made, so you should continue to look at off-campus options.
Visit our off-campus housing website for support and options in the local community.

How will I be able to select a roommate?
In the application:
-
- You will answer questions about yourself and how you want your living environment.
- You will be able to search for and communicate and with other students who are applying.
-
- If you have a desired individual you want to live with, you need to make sure of the following:
- You are in the same student population
-
- Undergraduate College (UGC)
- Honors College
- Simons STEM Scholars
- Scholars and matching UGC
- WISE and matching UGC
- New Transfer
- New Graduate
-
-
First Years can form a group of 2 individuals: You create a group or join a group allowing either member to control your room assignment fully. Recommended for those that already know each other and are in close communication. If you give someone this control, your selection is final, even if they made the selection for you. OR
-
First Years, New Graduates, and New Transfers can do back-to-back room selections: You must coordinate making your room selection so that as one person finishes, the next person starts.
-
One of you must select the space and finish the booking process.
-
As soon as the first person finishes booking, the second person can add the same room to their "cart" and complete the booking process.
-
Occasionally, someone else may take that second bed space when you try to complete the second-person booking. If this happens, you must wait until the following room change or swap time frame to see if a change can be made. You cannot force the other person out of a selected assignment.
-
- For different bedrooms in the same suite or apartment, all individuals can add their own bedroom at the same time in the shopping cart and select at the same time.
What is Gender Inclusive Housing?
-
- Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) is a housing option in which two or more students share a bedroom, suite, and/or apartment regardless of the students' sex, gender identity or gender expression. In other words, this option allows for students of any gender identity to live together regardless of sex assigned at birth.
- Choosing to live in Gender Inclusive Housing means that residents will have roommates and/or suitemates of any gender identities.
- Residents of Gender Inclusive Housing are committed to creating and affirming a bias-free environment for everyone living in this community.
- If you have an interest in Gender Inclusive Housing, you can sign up for this in the housing portal during published time frames. You will see a tab along the top of your housing portal labeled GIH.
- Once that process is live, please review all information prior to submitting it. Once submitted you have signed up to live in this community for the academic year. You will not be able to room change or room swap into gender-based male or female housing.
- New Fall 2023 Students will be able to sign up and see the GIH tab in the housing portal from April 17 at 11am until May 19 at 5pm. After May 19, sign-up is closed for the 23-24 academic year.
- New First Students' Gender Inclusive Community Important Notes
- This community is solely located in Benedict South regardless of Undergraduate College or Honors program.
- Your room selection start day will be June 1 at 11am if you sign up for this community regardless of your program so that all GIH participants have the ability to sign up at the same time.
- Participants will live in a double room in a traditional corridor style residence hall.
How do I go about canceling my application and will I be refunded?
If you no longer need on-campus housing, students can submit their cancellation request in the housing portal. Please review Financial Liability policies for important cancellation and application termination information.
Any resident who cancels their housing agreement loses eligibility for future housing. Choosing to live off campus requires the student to join a waiting list if they are interested in housing for a future semester or year. We cannot predict when or guarantee if students will get on campus housing by joining the waitlist. See full details on our financial liability website.
