About the Program
Singapore is an economically prosperous nation with a rich cultural history and a diverse population. In a 15-day study tour this course examines Singapore’s multiculturalism using as a backdrop British imperialism, post-colonial nation-building, relationships with neighboring countries, diasporic connections to China and India, economic forces of globalization and historic trade networks. The class will visit heritage sites, museums and historic landmarks of the three major populations of Chinese, Malays, Tamil (Indians). Additional excursions include popular sightseeing attractions. The course culminates with a three-day trip to the Malaysian city of Melaka known for its rich history of colonialism and cultural diversity. Through the experience, students will gain an understanding of the factors that transformed Singapore from a trading village to a 21stCentury model for nation-building.
