Self-Updating SBU Catalog Links
This is a "set it and forget it" solution for SBU website managers to link to a catalog
or to an individual program, course, or policy page on their website.
What are Self-Updating Catalog Links?
Normally, when a new university catalog is published each registration cycle, every catalog link on your website becomes outdated.
Self-updating catalog links solve this problem. You only have to place the link on
your page once. The system automatically detects when a new catalog is published and
seamlessly routes your visitors to the most current version of that catalog, program,
course, or policy page.
How to Find a Link
The main catalog links below will always point to the latest catalogs:
The system also contains a central link directory where you can browse and copy the specific program, course, or page links you need
for your site.
- Visit the link directory
- Navigate to your specific catalog (Undergraduate, Graduate, or Health Sciences)
- Browse the catalog programs, courses, or pages
- Once you find the item you want to link to, right-click the link and select "Copy
link address" from the context menu
Insert the copied URL into your webpage using the standard “Insert/Edit Link” tool in Modern Campus CMS, just as you would for any other website link.
URL Patterns at a Glance
The self-updating links contained within the system follow these simple patterns:
| TARGET | URL PATTERN |
| Catalog | stonybrook.edu/catalog/undergraduate/ |
| Program | stonybrook.edu/catalog/undergraduate/program/journalism-ba/ |
| Course | stonybrook.edu/catalog/graduate/course/mar-506/ |
| Policy Page | stonybrook.edu/catalog/undergraduate/page/restricted-majors/ |
A Note on Official Name Changes
Because Program and Page links are based on their titles, they are sensitive to official name changes. If a program is renamed in a new catalog (for example, changing from "Marine Sciences" to "Marine Sciences and Conservation"), the old link will still work by taking the user to the most recent archived version of that program. However, if you want your site to point to the renamed version in the new catalog, you will need to grab the updated link from the link registry.
This does not apply to course links, which use course codes (like MAR 104) and remain fully automated regardless of title changes.
