GO FAR BEYOND from your home country.
SBU Home Abroad - Fall 2020 Only
This program is designed for existing SBU and newly admitted undergraduate students who may not be able to enter the United States to attend SBU classes for Fall 2020.
Due to so much uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 regarding health and safety, travel logistics, costs, and timing of when we will return to normalcy, we felt it was necessary to give students time to make plans for Fall 2020. Students may find that it is not possible, or too challenging, to travel to SBU campus for the fall semester. Stony Brook is exploring opportunities for students that are in their home country to be able to take courses at one of our partner universities in one of our exchange programs for the Fall 2020 semester only. This opportunity will allow students to maintain their status as an SBU student, continue to make degree progress, and maintain your F-1 status while abroad.
How does SBU Home Abroad work?
Similar to our regular study abroad programs at partner universities, students’ must submit a study abroad application via the SBUAbroad Portal. Information regarding the next steps in the process will be distributed to students who have received formal nominations by their International Programs Coordinator. Students participating in the program will be enrolled full-time at SBU, which allows you to maintain your F-1 status while abroad.
We do not have the details regarding each of the campus’ plans for fall 2020 operations. Students interested need to understand that things may change. Full time course registration (equivalent of 12 SBU credits) is required to be part of the program. More information on academic policies are on the individual program pages. In whatever method courses are delivered, face to face or online, courses should be evaluated to see how they would transfer back for your specific degree program. Students will be given detailed information regarding this process. It is not guaranteed that all courses will be approved for specific course equivalencies, so students will work to build a flexible study plan and present courses to the appropriate academic departments for evaluation/approval.

What are the costs associated with SBU Home Abroad?
Many programs are operated as part of an exchange agreement where students only pay tuition to SBU. If any other academic related fees are required based on the arrangement made with the host university, an SBU International Programs Coordinator and or the host university coordinator will share those details at a later point in the process. Payments for housing and meal plans, if offered or selected by the individual, will be paid directly to the host university.
How will housing be arranged?
On campus housing may or may NOT be offered or available. Students are responsible to arrange their own housing, if necessary. Housing payments will be made directly to the host university or provider.
What programs are available and how to apply?
Students should be prepared with the following materials to upload to the SBUAbroad portal:
- Official transcript for existing SBU students and newly admitted transfer students
- Unofficial high school transcript for students that have recently graduated
- Current passport (many partner universities required as part for the admission process even though you will be in your home country)
