CPT Course Confirmation
As an academic department, you play an important role in the CPT authorization process by confirming that a student’s employment is directly connected to their academic program and tied to an appropriate course or degree requirement.
What the Department Confirms
When reviewing a CPT request, you must confirm that:
- The student is in good academic standing.
- The employment is directly related to the student’s major field of study.
- The student is enrolled in, or will enroll in, the appropriate internship, practicum, cooperative education, or research course.
- The course fulfills a degree requirement or is an integral part of the established curriculum.
- The requested employment dates align with the academic term and course requirements.
Important Reminders
- The student cannot begin employment until CPT authorization is approved by VIS and listed on the student’s Form I-20.
- CPT cannot be authorized retroactively.
- The student may only work during the approved dates listed on the Form I-20.
- Changes to employment dates, employer, work location, or course registration may require a new CPT authorization.
Processing Expectations
You are asked to complete CPT verification requests within 2-3 business days to avoid delays in employment authorization. All requests are submitted electronically through accessVIS.
