Extending Your DS-2019
You must complete your program by the end date listed in Section 3 of your Form DS-2019.
If you need more time to complete your program, you may request a Program Extension
and receive a new DS-2019 with an updated program end date.
Eligibility Requirements
You may be eligible for a program extension if you meet all of the following requirements:
- You are currently maintaining valid J-1 status.
- You have maintained full-time enrollment, or been authorized for RCL, during your program.
-
You have sufficient financial support to cover tuition, fees, and living expenses for the additional time needed.
Finishing Program in Summer or Winter
If you will complete your degree during a summer or winter session, that term is treated the same as a regular semester for immigration reporting and enrollment.
You must be enrolled full-time or be approved for a Reduced Course Load (RCL), and you must follow normal online credit limitations.

- Extensions are typically granted for up to one year at a time.
- You must maintain valid health insurance for the entire extension period.
