Transferring Sponsorship to SBU
If you are currently in J-1 status, you may be eligible to transfer your program sponsorship (such as Fulbright, IIE, LASPAU, IREX, or Amideast) to Stony Brook University.
Eligibility
You may transfer your J-1 program if:
- You will continue and complete the original objective of your J-1 program
- You will remain in the same J-1 participant category
How to Apply
Step 1: Speak with Your Current J-1 Sponsor
Before you begin, talk with your current sponsor about your plan to transfer to Stony Brook University. You should confirm:
- Whether the transfer will affect your funding
- If there are any restrictions on transferring your sponsorship
- The required process and timeline to release your SEVIS record
Step 2: Speak with Visa and Immigration Services (VIS)
After you speak with your sponsor, contact VIS to review your eligibility and next steps. During this discussion, you should confirm:
- Whether your funding meets J-1 requirements after the transfer
- What documents you must submit
- Whether your current Form DS-2019 needs to be extended
- The expected timeline for your transfer
Step 3: Submit Your Request in accessVIS
Submit the Transfer of J-1 Program Sponsorship request in accessVIS.
You must upload:
- Your current sponsor information
- Your funding information
- A copy of your passport
- A copy of your current Form DS-2019
- Proof of your funding
Step 4: Receive Your Stony Brook DS-2019
After you submit all required documents, an International Student Advisor will review your request. Processing typically takes up to 10 business days.
You will receive an email when your request is complete. After your SEVIS record is transferred, you must complete the J-1 Immigration Check-in with VIS.
