Taking a Leave of Absence
If you plan to take a leave of absence from Stony Brook University, you must notify Visa and Immigration Services (VIS).
Step 1: Notify VIS
Follow these steps:
- Go to accessVIS: https://vis.stonybrook.edu
- Select Full Services and log in with your NetID and password
- Select J-1 Student Services from the left menu
- Complete and submit the Ending My J-1 Status eForm
In the form, include your planned departure date and flight information.
Step 2: Complete the University Process
You must also complete the university’s official withdrawal or leave of absence process.
- Stopping attendance does not count as an official withdrawal
- You remain responsible for tuition and fees until you complete the required process
Undergraduate Students
Submit the Leave of Absence request in SOLAR, or through the Office of the Registrar. Review the Registrar's
Leave of Absence information for details.
Graduate Students
Submit the Request for Leave of Absence form. Review the Leave of Absence policy in the Graduate Catalog before submitting.
If you have questions about tuition or billing, contact Student Financial Services.
What Happens Next
After you submit this form, the following will occur:
- Your SEVIS record will be shortened
Your program end date will be updated to reflect your early departure. - Your current Form DS-2019 will no longer be valid for travel
You cannot use this document to re-enter the United States.
Keep a copy for your personal records. - Your future eligibility is not impacted
This action does not negatively affect your ability to return to the United States for a future program. - You will have a 15-day grace period
You must depart the United States within 15 days of your updated program end date.
