Initiating a Permanent Residency Request
Step 1: Confirm Employee Record
- Make sure you have an SBU ID (Empl ID).
- If a new ID was created, wait 24 hours before continuing.
Step 2: Review Employee Information
Check that the following details are correct in PeopleSoft:
- Date of birth
- Email address
- Citizenship
Step 3: Prepare Required Documents
Upload the following documents in PDF format:
- Offer letter or employment contract
- Description of job duties
Step 4: Submit Referral Request
Submit the Immigration Counsel Referral Request in accessVIS.
Step 5: Employee Submits Information
The employee will receive instructions to complete their portion.
Step 6: Export Control Review
VIS will coordinate required screening.
Step 7: VIS Review
VIS will review the request within 5–7 business days and follow up if needed.
Processing Time
Applying for Permanent Residency can be long process. It may take several years or longer, depending on:
- Your sponsorship path
- Your country of birth
Important Reminder
- You must work with VIS for all SBU-sponsored cases
- You cannot contact immigration counsel directly unless VIS has made a referral
- The University does not allow outside attorneys unless they are SUNY-contracted
