Interests: Environmental History, Nineteenth and Early-Twentieth Century United States, Rivers and Wetlands, Cultural History and Memory
I am interested in America’s waterways and wetlands, and how ideas and perceptions of nature influence how humans interact with, and change, these places. Through this interpretive lens I also focus on US expansion and empire, and Euroamerican myths of civilization, frontier, and wilderness.
My current research project centers on American Christian missionizing of Indigenous peoples in the mid-nineteenth century, and how these missionaries conflated Christianity with Euroamerican-style agriculture and dreams of 'civilization.'
