Diversity, Equality and Inclusion
The History Department takes great pride in Stony Brook University's status as one of the most diverse public universities in New York State, the northeast, and in the nation, and as one of the nation's most successful " engines of upward economic mobility." We fully support SBU's commitment to enhancing student, faculty and staff diversity; recognizing and addressing the persistent issues of inequality in our society; and building an inclusive community. We view these initiatives as benefiting all members of the university community.
We strive to create a departmental atmosphere that welcomes students, staff, and faculty regardless of gender, race, sexuality, culture, or class, and where the talents, skills, insights, and contributions of all community members are seen, valued and respected. We regard Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as critical in enriching our department’s research, teaching, learning, and community building. We are committed to implementing practices of DEI in hiring, departmental atmosphere and climate, pedagogy, and the curriculum.
We recognize (and seek to curtail) exclusion, marginalization, or disenfranchisement on the basis of: race; ethnicity; national origin; religion; sex; gender identity; sexual orientation; ability or disability status; family/domestic situation; socio-economic group; political beliefs; color; veteran status; age; citizenship status; or indigeneity.
Some specific departmental goals related to DEI include:
- Promoting efforts to diversify the enrollment and aid the retention of graduate and undergraduate students
- Removing or reducing barriers for entry into graduate school among underrepresented demographics
- Promoting efforts to further diversify the faculty
- Programming events, workshops, and reading groups that can offer a wide range of historical perspectives on historical inequities and current DEI-related concerns .
The department has constituted a DEI Committee tasked with refining and implementing policies to help us realize these goals.
