About the Department of History

The Department of History at Stony Brook University is dedicated to exploring the past in ways that deepen understanding of the present and prepare students to engage thoughtfully with the world. As part of a leading public research university within the State University of New York system, the department brings together scholars and students who examine historical change across cultures, societies, and time periods.

Our faculty are internationally recognized researchers and educators whose work spans global regions and diverse fields of study. Through innovative scholarship and engaged teaching, the department encourages students to think critically, analyze historical evidence, and communicate ideas clearly.

Teaching and Learning

The department offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses that explore historical experiences from the ancient world to the present. Our curriculum emphasizes global perspectives, interdisciplinary approaches, and the development of strong research and writing skills.

Students have opportunities to work closely with faculty, conduct independent research, and participate in community building initiatives such as the History Book Nook, The History Club and Phi Alpha Theta.

Research is central to the department’s mission. Faculty and graduate students contribute to historical scholarship through books, articles, digital projects, and public history initiatives. Many faculty collaborate across disciplines, including through programs such as the Initiative for Historical Social Sciences, which connects historians with scholars in related fields to examine major questions about society, culture, and global change.

Community and Engagement

The Department of History is an active intellectual community. Lectures, workshops, conferences, and public events bring together students, faculty, visiting scholars, and community members to share ideas and engage with historical scholarship.
