• Emergency Management

In order to respond effectively to emergency situations, Stony Brook University's Emergency Management Office maintains an Emergency Management Plan and has created an Emergency Operations Center and an Emergency Management Team. The team is trained to evaluate and respond to major emergency situations using the Incident Command System, ensuring effective management of the people, organizations, and resources on campus.

    SB Alert & SB Guardian

SB Alert is an emergency notification system that alerts the campus community about major emergencies, immediate threats or other emergency situations. The system can send a message to any device you select. Every student and employee should sign up.

Sign up now for SB Alerts

SB Guardian is frequently referred to as a "personal blue light phone" in your pocket. The system can provide a one-touch call to notify University Police. It also offers a precautionary timer that alerts police if a traveling user does not reach a campus destination by a given time.

    Red Watch Band

Toxic drinking is an epidemic on campuses all across America. It means consuming so much alcohol the drinker passes out. But while "sleeping it off," the victim may be quietly dying.

The Red Watch Band movement is designed to end alcohol overdose deaths by teaching students how to handle alcohol emergencies and summon professional help.

    How You Can Help

Know the Signs of emotional distress

If your friend is showing signs of emotional distress, encourage them to get connected with a professional who can help. If you walk them over to CAPS, you are helping them take the first step and you will know they have been seen by a counselor.

If you or someone else is experiencing an emergency during non-business hours, call UPD (631-632-3333) or 911 for immediate assistance. Mental health emergencies are life-threatening situations that may include imminent danger of harming oneself or others, or behavior that suggests people cannot keep themselves safe.

  • Sexual Violence

    Sexual Misconduct

If you are the victim of sexual violence, you are not alone. Sexual violence happens to people of all genders and sexual orientations. Your safety is our primary concern. The following are suggested steps to take after an incident.

    1. Be Safe. If you are in immediate danger contact University Police at 333 from a campus phone or 631-632-3333 from a non-campus phone. If you are you are not on campus, contact 911 for your local police.

Go to a safe place and seek immediate support from a trusted friend, family member or university staff member.

    2. Get Medical Help as soon as possible.

Within 96 hours (4 days) of the incident, you may walk into the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Center at Stony Brook University Hospital and request a free medical and forensic exam. The nurse is trained to obtain evidence should you decide to report the incident to police and/or press charges. You are provided an emergency room companion and crisis counseling begins immediately.

Recommendations are to NOT bathe, change clothes, eat or use the bathroom immediately after an assault as doing so could destroy evidence. But even if you have already taken any of these actions you can still access SANE services for 96 hours after the incident.

SANE services is open to all genders at no cost, your parents will not be notified, and you will not be required to make a police report.

If you have any questions or would like more information regarding the SANE exam, contact the Survivor Advocate and Prevention Specialist at (631) 457-9981.

Student Health Service at Stony Brook University.

If 96 hours (4 days) have passed since the incident, you may obtain confidential medical care on campus at the Student Health Service located next to Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium parking.

    3. Get Confidential Emotional Support.

CONFIDENTIAL support and resource options are available to students who experience sexual or relationship violence. The Survivor Advocate and Prevention Specialist is available 24/7 to provide crisis support and emergency response immediately following an incident. If you want a forensic medical exam within 4 days of the incident, the Survivor Advocate and Prevention Specialist can coordinate this through the Stony Brook University Hospital.

      Survivor Advocate & Prevention Specialist:

      Samantha Winter

      Contact: (631) 457-9981

Free support is also available through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), located on the second floor of the Student Health Service building.

You can also use off-campus counseling services at VIBS Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center by calling their Hotline at 631-360-3606.

    4. File a Title IX Complaint. A federal law known as Title IX protects all Stony Brook students, faculty and staff by prohibiting sexual discrimination and harassment in all forms. If you wish to file a complaint of sexual misconduct, contact Stony Brook’s Director for Title IX and Risk Management.

What to do if you know a victim of sexual misconduct:

Encourage that person to read this document, seek medical care and talk to a trained counselor or sexual assault advocate. Be clear that you support that person. Most importantly, consider and protect that person’s privacy. Be sensitive to what they are going through as part of the healing process.
