AGEP Mentoring

A component of the AGEP Alliance is a Near-Peer and Alumni Mentoring Program. The AGEP Near-Peer and Alumni Program enable alumni to share their professional and personal experiences and expertise with current AGEP Fellows. The connections made in the program help prepare our Fellows for a successful future, navigate uncertainty and prepare for a career in both academia and industry.

Near-Peer Mentoring

Near-peer relationships give fellows substantive feedback, emotional support, and professional development guidance in an environment often perceived to be a “safer” space than the traditional PI/dissertation advisor relationship (Glessmer et al., 2015). Within this safe space, fellows are more likely to find role models who can offer sponsorship and potential access to new research and career networks.

Alumni Mentoring Network

A virtual, alumni mentoring network that joins all Alliance fellows (dissertating PhDs and postdoctoral scholars) to alumni of previous AGEP (or IRACDA) programs who now hold faculty positions at PUIs. Through this network, fellows may serve as both mentee and mentor in others’ mentoring maps, offering additional motivational and experiential benefits (Glessmer et al., 2015).
