How to Gain Credit for an Experience

Internships

What is internship credit for?

Waverly Alcure

The primary purpose of doing an internship is to better understand the theories, and practices of your discipline by actively engaging in a hands-on, work-based, learning experience. It is important to remember that academic credit is awarded for the learning achieved, not for the work experience alone.

What is EXP+?

Options to Receive Credit/EXP+ for an Internship

There are two ways to receive credits for an internship or experience. Please note, students cannot enroll through both options for the same experience in one semester.

    Career Center’s EXT 288/488/588

    • Experience/internship can be related or not related to your major
    • General academic credit
    • Faculty sponsor from any department
    • Class option for lower-division (288), upper-division (488), and graduate (588)
    • Includes on-campus and off-campus opportunities
    • EXT courses may not satisfy CPT requirements for international students, but a few exceptions may apply*.  Visit Visa and Immigration Services with any questions.

    Departmental Major (Non-EXT)

    • Experience would be directly related to your major or minor
    • Academic credit toward your major
    • Faculty sponsor from your major department
    • Class options may vary by department
    • International students applying for CPT need to enroll under their academic department, but a few exceptions may apply*. Visit Visa and Immigration Services with any questions.

*If the academic major/department doesn't have an internship course, as long as the EXP+ requirement has not yet been met AND the internship is directly related to the student's major, students are eligible to register under EXT courses.

  • 3. Request

A student must request and be granted permission to enroll. Students must be completing the internship/experience until the end of the semester they are requesting to enroll for credit. Please note, students cannot enroll through both options for the same experience in one semester.
