    Stony Brook is required by law to verify that each person has sufficient funds to cover the period of their stay in the U.S.  In most cases, the documentation we require will also be required at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate when applying for the J-1 visa.

  • Acceptable Sources of Funding

    Acceptable Sources of Funding

    Visitors must provide one or more of the following as pieces evidence as proof of funds. All documentation must be no more than six months old.

    State support
    Research Foundation support
    (U.S. or foreign) government support
    Agency or business support
    Personal funds
    Support from other private individuals

     

  • Minimum Annual Financial Requirement

    Minimum Annual Financial Requirement (subject to change without notice)*

    J-1 Principal $36,796/year
    J-2 Spouse $9,000/year
    J-2 Child (each) $5,000/year (Not Including Child Care)

    *  May be pro-rated to actual length of stay.
