Overview
Stony Brook is required by law to verify that each person has sufficient funds to cover the period of their stay in the U.S. In most cases, the documentation we require will also be required at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate when applying for the J-1 visa.

Acceptable Sources of Funding
Visitors must provide one or more of the following as pieces evidence as proof of funds. All documentation must be no more than six months old.
State supportThe academic department Chair’s signature and letter of offer indicating job title, salary and employment dates are sufficient evidence of a State payroll appointment.Research Foundation supportThe academic department Chair’s signature, project director’s signature and letter of offer are sufficient proof of a Research Foundation payroll appointment.(U.S. or foreign) government supportEvidence of support should be presented in English, on agency letterhead, and detail the purpose of the support, amount of support, and specify the period during which the support will be available. Must be signed by an appropriate government officer.Agency or business supportEvidence of support should be presented in English, on agency letterhead, and detail the purpose of the support, amount of support, and specify the period during which the support will be available. It should include an original signature from an appropriate officer. If a private company will provide support, the company must provide a bank statement that documents adequate company assets to provide promised support.Personal fundsA bank statement in the prospective visitor’s own name documenting current balance and transactions for the previous six months; alternatively, a letter from the bank manager indicating current account balance and average six-month account balance.Support from other private individualsAn “Affidavit of Support” form (Download Here) must be completed by any private individual willing to offer support to the prospective Exchange Visitor. The Affidavit of Support must be accompanied by a bank statement in the owner's name documenting the current balance, as proof that the funds promised are available; alternatively, a letter from the bank manager indicating current account balance is acceptable. - Minimum Annual Financial Requirement
