International Health Insurance

Federal regulations require J-1 visa holders to maintain a minimum level of health insurance for themselves and any J-2 dependents for the duration of their stay in the United States ( See   22 C.F.R. 62.14).   SBU policy, which complies with federal regulation, requires that all J visa holders purchase SBU coverage for health and hospitalization, medical evacuation and repatriation insurance.    There are no exceptions to this requirement.  J visa holders must purchase this insurance immediately upon arrival at SBU.  Dependents arriving at a later date must be enrolled within 30 days of arrival to the U.S. to ensure eligibility.

Enrollment instructions will be given by VIS upon arrival to SBU. Once you are enrolled in the health insurance plan, you will receive information directly from United Healthcare and instructions on how to print your insurance card.
