Requesting a Form I-20 or DS-2019

International Students admitted into a full-time academic program at Stony Brook University must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20 or DS-2019) to enter and/or re-enter the U.S. in F-1 Student or J-1 Exchange Visitor status. This applies to new students and transfer students from another U.S. university, college or high school. Students returning from a leave of absence must also have a Form I-20 or DS-2019 to return/remain in the United States. The procedures for requesting a Form I-20 / DS-2019 differs depending on academic level and visa type, please read the following instructions carefully:

Fall Applicants: I-20/DS-2019 request will be available in accessVIS on  March 1st.
Spring Applicants: I-20/DS-2019 request will be available in accessVIS on  October 1st.
Summer  Applicants : I-20/DS-2019 request will be available in accessVIS on  March 1st.

Undergraduate Students

Four to six months before the beginning of each new semester, VIS will email all non-U.S. citizen/non-permanent resident admitted student instructions on how to request a Form I-20 in accessVIS.  The email will include the student's Limited Services PIN. Students may submit a request for an I-20 prior to matriculating, however those who have paid the initial tuition deposit will be issued Form I-20.

  • Log in to accessVIS Limited Services using your Stony Brook ID, Date of Birth, and PIN. Complete all required forms located within the SBU Issued Form I-20/DS-2019 request linked from the accessVIS Home Page under "Requests."
  • Upon admission to Stony Brook, pay your deposit and international student fee in  SOLAR. Be sure to also complete your New Student Preferences.
  • Your request will then be reviewed by an international student advisor. If your request is approved, your Form I-20 will be processed and mailed to you via UPS Express.

Students transferring from another U.S. institution (college, university, or high school) should visit our Transfer In page.

 

Graduate Students

Four to six months before the beginning of each new semester, VIS will email all non-U.S. citizen/non-permanent resident admitted student instructions on how to request a Form I-20 in accessVIS.  The email will include the student's Limited Services PIN.

Students may begin their request an I-20 upon admission by their academic department, but only those cleared for admission by the appropriate office (The Graduate School, SPD, HSC, IAP) will be issued a Form I-20.  Students who might be eligible for university funding (TA, RA, PhD, etc.) should wait until they have received their offer/award letter to request a Form I-20.

  • Log in to accessVIS Limited Services using your Stony Brook ID, Date of Birth, and PIN. Complete all required forms located within the SBU Issued Form I-20/DS-2019 for Graduate Students request linked from the accessVIS Home Page under "Requests."
  • Graduate students will need to be admitted by both their Academic Department and the Graduate School before an Form I-20 can be issued.
  • Your request will then be reviewed by an international student advisor. If your request is approved, your Form I-20 will be processed and mailed to you via UPS Express.

Exchange Students

  • Log in to accessVIS Limited Services using your Stony Brook ID, Date of Birth, and PIN. Complete all required forms located within the SBU Issued Form I-20/DS-2019 request linked from the accessVIS Home Page under "Requests."
  • The  Study Abroad & Exchange Office will coordinate your admission to Stony Brook
  • Your request will then be reviewed by an international student advisor. If your request is approved, your DS-2019 will be processed and mailed to your home institution.
 

Deadlines

Spring Admits: Requests for Form I-20/DS-2019 must be submitted in accessVIS by December 1st
Summer Admits:  Requests for Form I-20/DS-2019 must be submitted in accessVIS by April  15th
Fall Admits:  Requests for Form I-20/DS-2019 must be submitted in accessVIS by   June 15th

Requests submitted after the respective deadline, will be reviewed on a case by case basis based on visa wait times.
