    Directions to Campus

    Students have the option of using public transportation to get to Stony Brook University. The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) Stony Brook Station is conveniently located on campus. Here are different ways on how to get to the campus.

     

    Public transportation from New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK):

    From JFK airport, take the AIRTRAIN to Jamaica station for the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). The $5 trip to Jamaica station lasts approximately 5 minutes. From the Jamaica station, take the LIRR (Port Jefferson line, eastbound) to the Stony Brook station, about a 2 hour ride. One-way fares range from $9.00 to $12.50, depending on the time of day.

    Purchase your LIRR ticket from one of the ticket machines before boarding the train. You may purchase your ticket on the train (cash only) however there is an additional fee on board the train. The ticket machines accept U.S. Currency in small denominations, credit and debit cards.

    Public transportation from New York City (NYC):

    From Penn Station (34th Street and 7th Avenue), take the Long Island Railroad (LIRR)’s Port Jefferson line to the Stony Brook station.

     

    Public transportation from Newark Airport (EWR):

    Students arriving from Newark Liberty International Airport, should consult the NJ Transit Website for how to get from EWR to New York City Penn Station. From New York Penn Station take the LIRR train to Stony Brook University.

  • Health Insurance
     

    Health Insurance

    All exchange visiting students are required to purchase the International Student Health Insurance. This will automatically be charged to your student account prior to your arrival at Stony Brook. Additional information, including rates and coverage, can be found by visiting the Student Health Services webpage.

    Students are able to submit their health and immunization forms through accessVIS. Please make sure that both forms are signed and stamped my a medical practitioner. The required forms are located on the Student Health Services forms page.

  • Housing
     

    Housing

    Exchange and visiting students are guaranteed a room on campus for the duration of their study abroad program. Stony Brook has both apartment and residence style housing and students have the option of selecting a single or double room. The housing preference form* will be available once an exchange/visiting student is accepted to Stony Brook University. Please visit the campus residences website for more information, including housing rates, services and photos.

  • Meal Plan
     

    Meal Plan

    Stony Brook has two main dining halls and several retail locations featuring American and International cuisine. A meal plan is required for students living in residence hall (dormitory) housing. Students residing in apartment style housing have the option to purchase a meal plan.

    Wolfie Wallet is a campus prepaid declining balance debit account encoded on your campus ID. It is a safe and convenient way to make food purchases from on and off campus merchants, make purchases from campus stores and vending machines, mail packages in the residential mailroom, and utilize print and copy services. Wolfie Wallet is different from the Meal Plan.

    Athletics

    Stony Brook University is home of the Seawolves! Support our 16 Division I sports team at our state of the art athletic facilities. Admission to all sporting events is free with your student ID card. Remember to wear red!

    Recreation Center

    Stony Brook has a state of the art recreation center on campus. The rec center has a gymnasium, indoor track, exercise machines, renovated pool and fitness classes. Smaller fitness centers are located in the residence quads.

    Academic Help

    Brightspace

    Brightspace is a tool used by professors to send email and to post course announcements, documents and assignments. Brightspace is accessed with your Net ID and is attached to your SBU E-mail account.

    The Academic Success & Tutoring Center provides all undergraduate students with free small group and one-on-one tutoring appointments for various courses.

    The Writing Center on the second floor of the Humanities Building is committed to helping students with their writing. Writing center tutors will help writers brainstorm, organize, focus and develop their written works.
