Transferring to a New J-1 Program Sponsor

If you plan to continue your J-1 program at another institution, you must complete a SEVIS transfer. This process allows your J-1 record to move from Stony Brook University to your new program sponsor without ending your J-1 status.

You must follow the correct steps to ensure your status remains valid.

What Is a SEVIS Transfer?

A SEVIS transfer moves your J-1 record from one sponsor to another.

  • Your new sponsor cannot issue a new Form DS-2019 until your SEVIS record has been transferred

  • The transfer must be completed electronically through SEVIS

  • Your J-1 status must remain active at the time of transfer

Eligibility for Transfer

You may be eligible to transfer if:

  • You are currently in valid J-1 status

  • You have been accepted by a new J-1 program sponsor

  • Your new program is in the same J-1 category (for example, Research Scholar or Professor)

  • You have not exceeded the maximum time allowed for your category

Transfer Effective Date

A transfer effective date is the date your SEVIS record moves to your new sponsor.

  • After this date, Stony Brook University will no longer have access to your SEVIS record

  • Your new sponsor will take full responsibility for your program

You must work with Visa and Immigration Services (VIS) to choose an appropriate transfer effective date.

How to Request a Transfer

To request a transfer:

  1. Contact your VIS advisor to discuss your intent to transfer

  2. Submit the J-1 Program Transfer Request in accessVIS

  3. Follow any additional instructions provided by VIS

Important Timing Considerations

  • Your transfer must be completed before your current program end date

  • You must continue your program activities at Stony Brook until the transfer effective date

  • You must begin your program at the new institution shortly after the transfer

After the Transfer

Once your SEVIS record is transferred:

  • Your new sponsor will issue a new Form DS-2019

  • You must follow all instructions from your new sponsor

  • Your immigration record will be managed by the new institution

Important Reminders

  • Do not end your program early without consulting VIS

  • Do not begin your new program until your SEVIS record has been transferred

  • Maintain valid health insurance during the transfer process

  • Contact VIS before making any final arrangements
