Newly Admitted Students: Next Steps

On behalf of the First and Second Year (FYSY) Office, Welcome to Stony Brook University!

To get you started, make sure you complete the following once admitted:

  • Pay your tuition deposit on SOLAR.
  • Set Up Your NetID and NetID Password.
  • Address any Holds on your SOLAR Account.
  • Submit ALL of your required Health Documents:

-MMR
-Meningitis
-Health Insurance

Once complete, please review each of the next steps so you can get registered and ready for your first semester as a seawolf!

The Next Steps Checklist is also available on your StartSBU portal for quick reference.

New Student Registration

Complete your Advising Planning Form (APF) on your SBUStart Portal no later than June 1 to ensure you are registered in the appropriate courses.

The Advising Planning Form will:

  • Confirm your intended major
  • Allow you to self-report AP and transfer credits
  • Direct you to sign up for the Placement Exams you need

New students are required to take different placement exams to ensure they are placed in the proper courses Students may have to take up to 4 different placement exams which are described below. 

For more information about placement/preparation exams, please refer to the Advising Planning Form.

You should self report ALL Transfer and AP Credits on your Advising Planning Form.  In addition, if you have AP Math or Chemistry, please email a copy of your scores to  newtosbuadvising@stonybrook.edu. 

IMPORTANT for Transfer Credits:

Send  official transcripts from all colleges and universities to:

Report AP scores online through College Board . Code = 2548.

Registration Workshops  

Your Advisors and Registration Student Assistants will be enrolling you in your required courses.  Once you complete all of the required tasks, you will be prompted to select  a Registration Workshop Date.

Workshops are virtual via Zoom and first-come, first-serve. Complete all of your placement exams and matriculated checklist items in your SBUStart Portal no later than June 15 to receive priority registration in classes!

Please check your Stony Brook Email for Advising Information and Registration Workshop Information. The email will come from newtosbuadvising@stonybrook.edu.

Registration for Athletics, EOP, Simons STEM Scholars, Honors College, University Scholars, WISE Honors, or the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences

Special programs will host their own separate registration process. Please contact your program/advisor for additional information.

For students in a major in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, please contact CEAS_Advising@Stonybrook.edu.

For students in any special programs (Athletics, EOP, Honors College, University Scholars, WISE Honors, or Simons STEM Scholars), please contact your department for assistance.
