First-Year Fellows Program
SBU 275 - Spring Semester
This course has been designed to prepare students for their experience as a First-Year Fellow. Fellows act as a mentors to current and future first-semester students, work as teaching assistants for SBU 101 first-year seminars, and support advising programming initiatives. Content discussed in this course will provide the basis for the learning that will take place outside of the classroom throughout students' Fellows experiences and in interactions with the department leadership, 101 instructors, and peers. Topics include: leadership identity and vision, active listening, inclusive communication, application of developmental theories to mentorship scenarios, and resources within the University community.

SBU 276 - Fall Semester
This experiential learning course serves as an organizing principle around students’ experiences in the First-Year Fellows Program. Students assume higher responsibility and are given opportunities to apply teaching theories and concepts as learned in SBU 275 while serving as teaching assistants in SBU 101 courses.
Prerequisite: Completion of SBU 276 with a grade of S

Upper-Division Leadership Opportunities
First-Year and Second-Year Advising
SBU 475
The purpose of this course is to allow upper-division students the opportunity to work with a faculty member/instructor as an assistant in one of the faculty member/instructor’s scheduled First Year (SBU 101 or 102) or First-Year Fellows (SBU 275) seminars. The student must attend all classes and carry out tasks assigned by the instructor to assist in teaching the course. The student will meet with the instructor on a regular basis to discuss intellectual and pedagogical matters relating to the course.
SBU 488
Students learn about contemporary issues in higher education, community-building, and teaching and learning at a research university through hands-on work with faculty mentors. Internship experiences include participation in the planning and implementation of events and initiatives sponsored by First Year and Second Year Advising.
Upper-Class Advising
ADV 488
This two semester internship offers sophomores, juniors, and seniors an opporuntiy to gain leadership and advising knowledge, imporve personal and professional skills, and explore career aspirations while providing assistance to others. Active participation is required and training will occur through the analysis of issues relevant to academic advisng, case studies, readng and discussion of current evvents and relevant articles, and presention skill training and practice.
Transfer Advising
ADV 475
This course is designed to prepare students for their expereince as a Transfer Success Mentor. Transfer Success Mentors serve as peer mentors and teaching assistants for the ADV 101 transfer seminars. Topics include leadership development, classroom facilitiation techniques, presentation skills and lesson planning.

ADV 476
This experiential learning course builds on students' foundational expereinces in the Transfer Success Mentor Program. In their second semester, mentors take on increased responsiblity as an active Mentor and TA in their assigned ADV 101 course.
