About Exploratory and Undeclared Student Advising
Undecided or undeclared students at Stony Brook are given space to explore different academic paths while completing general education requirements through the Stony Brook Curriculum. Many students begin without a declared major, and the university encourages them to reflect on their interests, strengths, and long‑term goals while meeting regularly with academic advising. Stony Brook requires students to declare a major upon earning 45 credits, and transfer students entering as sophomores or above must declare during their first semester. The declaration process is completed through the Major/Minor Change form in SOLAR, which becomes available during designated declaration periods listed in the Academic Calendar.

Advising Options for Exploratory and Undeclared Students
Students can book either in person or virtual 30 minute appointments with their assigned
advisor via Navigate. Appointment availability is posted every Friday for the upcoming week. If you do
not see any available appointments, please refer to drop-in advising when available.

- Select "Find Available Appointment Time"
