Special Tips for Out-of-State and Out-of-Area Students

Residents can receive mail on campus. At the start of the semester, the mailroom operation experiences peak utilization. It is strongly encouraged that students wait to ship large items so they arrive after the student reaches campus. Please note that we are unable to accept packages for individuals who do not currently reside on campus. The delivery of extremely large items requiring freight or other carrier delivery services, such as auto parts or furniture, will be refused.

Heat Safety Tips for Move-In

As we prepare to welcome you to campus, it’s crucial to keep safety in mind amid the warmer weather we’ve been experiencing. Please be mindful that many of our residence halls do not have air conditioning. We urge you to check your room description in the housing portal to plan accordingly. In your room description, your room will be listed as air-conditioned or non-air-conditioned. Please visit our Staying Safe webpage for more heat safety tips.

Finding Your New Home

All buildings at Stony Brook University can be searched for on services such as Google and Apple Maps in order to find walking and driving directions.

Find Your Community

Move-In Process

Upon arrival on campus, you should report to your check-in tent located in your residential community. At the location, you will be required to:

  • Have two copies of your check-in pass: one to bring to check-in and one to place in your vehicle's dashboard. You can print your pass in late July in the Housing Portal "Assignment Confirmation" page for your most current move-in date and time.

  • Bring photo ID (Stony Brook ID, driver's license, passport, etc.)

Guest Assistance: You are limited to no more than two other persons in addition to yourself in the residence hall while you move in.  As such, the University strongly recommends that you not travel to campus with multiple family members, as they will not be permitted to enter the building.

Vehicle at Move-in: Arrive in only one vehicle and do not leave vehicles unattended in non-designated parking areas. Unload and park in an appropriate location. Cars can only be parked for unloading for 15 minutes outside of a residential building. As soon as all items are unloaded from your vehicle, move your car to a parking space. All residents moving in with a vehicle should print a second copy of their check-in pass, which must be displayed on the dashboard of their vehicle to assist in locating them if the car needs to be moved. Use of a trailer during move-in will not be permitted. Do not park in handicap, metered, or faculty/staff parking.

Summer Move-Over: If you are living on campus over the summer, you will be able to move into your fall housing assignment on August 13 between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM. All Summer Move-Overs must be completed by August 14 at 4:00 PM.

Roommate Agreement

This agreement will be created by your RA, who will work with you and your roommates and/or suitemates to set agreed-upon common rules. Please reach out to your RA if you have any questions.

Reporting a Problem

If, for any reason, you experience issues requiring maintenance, use FIXIT to submit work requests for maintenance, repairs involving pre-existing infrastructure, sign requests, or special events. Once you submit a request, you will receive email updates on its status. If you have any questions, please contact your area office. For any issues with washers and dryers, please contact your RA or a residential staff member to report them.

Resources

Students are expected to insure their personal property through a renters insurance policy or confirm with their homeowner’s insurance carrier that the student’s property (including computers and other electronics) is covered for loss while housed outside of the family dwelling.

Stony Brook University has partnered with GradGuard, which offers a unique renter’s insurance program that has protected over 500,000 students nationwide.

Students can purchase GradGuard Renter's Insurance when submitting their housing application.

Protect your belongings from things like:
