Frequently Asked Questions

The need for on-campus housing is growing, and despite the 3,000 additional beds added over the last 15 years, temporary housing is necessary to accommodate the number of students prioritized for housing. In addition, housing renewals from returning students and enrollment at Stony Brook have increased.

We will detriple students as soon as space permits to another space on campus.

Most residents will select their own space in new student room selection. When on the shopping cart page, you will see the room is designated as a temporary triple in the room description of a double occupancy room.

Successful living in a temporary triple involves open communication and collaboration with your roommates. Both Residence Hall Directors (RHDs) and Resident Assistants (RAs) are available to assist with any issues that arise.

Students assigned to a temporary triple receive several adjustments to recognize their flexibility and support their transition to campus life.

    • Housing Rate Reduction: Students in a temporary triple receive a 25% discount on the housing room rate for as long as they are in the triple.
    • Wolfie Wallet Credit: Students assigned to a temporary triple as of August 1 receive $200 in Wolfie Wallet to be used for dining or laundry on campus.
    • Future Housing Priority: Students who are in a temporary triple until November 1 or longer will receive the earliest rising sophomore time slot in the returning resident room selection for 2027-2028. This does not apply to students who opted into a voluntary temporary triple before November 1.

Students in a triple are permitted to request 1:1 swaps into other tripled rooms through their area office after the room change freeze is over.

We strongly urge temporary housing residents to contact their roommates to discuss larger items that they may wish to bring (TV, refrigerator, speakers, etc.) to reduce the possibility of redundancy. It is also important that all students pack responsibly to ensure that each roommate will have sufficient living space.

Roommates are listed on the assignment confirmation tab of the Housing Portal. You will soon be able to view your roommates after all have self-selected or been assigned.

We reassign the student in the third bedspace (ending in -3 in the housing portal) to a double occupancy room.
