September 2026, 691 students from Stony Brook University’s College of Engineering
and Applied Sciences (CEAS) gathered for the CEAS Involvement Fair, giving new and
returning students an opportunity to discover the many student clubs and organizations
available across the college. Members of Stony Brook University’s Student AIAA chapter recently visited GE Aerospace
Innoveering in Bohemia, New York, where they gained firsthand insight into advanced
aerospace engineering and technology. The 50th Mechanisms and Robotics Conference, held August 23–26 in Houston, Texas,
brought together researchers in mechanisms, robotics, and engineering design as part
of the 2026 ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers
and Information in Engineering Conference (ASME IDETC-CIE).
Stony Brook University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering was well represented
at the milestone conference.
During a two-day campus visit to Stony Brook University congressional staff from the
offices of Senator Chuck Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Nick
LaLota, Representative Andrew Garbarino, Representative Laura Gillen, and Representative
Joseph Morelle met with university leaders, researchers, and clinicians and visited
facilities across campus to learn more about Stony Brook’s research, innovation, and
clinical programs. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University welcomes Ryan Schilling,
who joined the department as a Research Assistant Professor in September 2026. His
research connects mechanics, photonics, and quantum engineering, exploring how tiny
vibrating structures lose energy and how their stress, geometry, and materials can
be engineered to reduce those losses. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University proudly congratulates
Carlos E. Colosqui and David Hwang on their promotions to Full Professor of Mechanical
Engineering, and Shanshan Yao on her promotion to Associate Professor of Mechanical
Engineering. These promotions recognize their outstanding contributions to research,
education, innovation, and service. On August 28, the MACH1 Innovation Hub welcomed students, faculty, and staff to The
Space Makerspace & Innovation Hub for a “MACH”TAIL Mixer, offering the Stony Brook
community an opportunity to explore the makerspace, connect with others, and discover
the possibilities available to them. As unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) become increasingly common in applications ranging
from logistics and search and rescue to surveillance and live-event videography, the
risk of unintended collisions with people has also grown. While collision-avoidance
systems can reduce these risks, they depend on sensors and electronic controls that
may not always detect or respond to an unexpected collision in time. In a new study
sponsored by the Department of the Navy, Office of Naval Research (ONR)... Associate Professor Anurag Purwar has been honored with the 2025 ASME Journal of Mechanical
Design Associate Editor Award. The award recognizes Associate Editors for their outstanding
contributions to the journal, considering the quantity, quality, and turnaround time
of papers they coordinated over the past year... On August 20, 2026, Douglas Monticciolo, CEO, CIO and Co-Founder of Brevet Capital,
partnered with Stony Brook University to host “Beyond AI: Quantum” at the Stony Brook
University Southampton Campus. The event featured experts from Stony Brook University
and industry who examined the growing potential of quantum technology and its implications
for society. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University is pleased to welcome
Katherine A. “Katie” Skinner as its newest Associate Professor. A leading researcher
in robotics, perception, and machine learning... Professor Shikui Chen has been named the 2025 ASME Journal of Mechanical Design Associate
Editor of the Year, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the journal
