Abdullah Al Muti Sharfuddin Successfully Defends PhD Dissertation on Turbulence-Cloud-Aerosol Interactions in the Atmosphere
Congratulations to Abdullah Al Muti Sharfuddin, a PhD student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University,
who successfully defended his doctoral dissertation today.
Titled "Direct Numerical Simulations of Turbulence-Cloud-Aerosol Interactions in the Atmosphere," Sharfuddin's research explores how microscopic interactions within clouds influence large-scale atmospheric behavior. Using advanced computer simulations, his work modeled the complex interactions between turbulence, cloud droplets, aerosol particles, and ice crystals. By capturing these small-scale processes, the research provides new insights into how clouds form, evolve, and transition to ice, phenomena that are difficult to represent accurately in current weather and climate models.
The findings demonstrate how turbulence and thermodynamic conditions affect cloud mixing, droplet formation, and glaciation, offering valuable information that could improve climate modeling, enhance forecasts of extreme weather, and strengthen predictions of aircraft icing at high altitudes.
After defending his dissertation, Sharfuddin shared his thoughts on reaching this milestone:
