A Message From The Undergraduate Program Director

Prof. Carlos Colosqui

At Stony Brook, we believe that engineering carries a profound responsibility to develop innovative, ethical, and human-centered solutions that serve the common good. Our undergraduate students join a community where education extends well beyond mastering technical fundamentals. Through hands-on design, research, internships, co-op opportunities, and close mentorship with faculty, they develop the knowledge, skills, and competence to solve real-world engineering challenges. Whether designing autonomous systems, developing advanced manufacturing processes, creating medical devices, or exploring emerging energy technologies, our students cultivate the creativity, analytical thinking, and leadership needed to address complex engineering problems.

We prepare our graduates not only for today's careers but also for a lifetime of learning and adaptation by equipping them to continuously expand their skillset as new technologies and challenges emerge.  Our graduates develop competence in artificial intelligence, digital engineering, advanced manufacturing, automation, robotics, data-driven design, and the evolving technologies that will shape Industry 4.0, Industry 5.0, and beyond.

We also recognize that engineering education transforms lives. We are committed to attracting and supporting talented individuals from all backgrounds by fostering an inclusive, accessible learning environment where students of all abilities can thrive and experience upward social mobility. A mechanical engineering degree opens doors to rewarding careers, expands economic opportunity for their families, strengthens their communities, and contributes to our nation's long-term prosperity and competitiveness.

Our mission is to educate exceptional mechanical engineers who combine technical excellence with integrity, curiosity, compassion, and a commitment to service. We aspire to educate individuals who recognize that the true measure of engineering is not only what we build, but how our work improves people's lives.
