Faculty and Staff

If you have clicked on this page, you are probably concerned about someone. Feel free to learn about how to help a student in the page below, or just give us a call anytime at (631) 632-6720 to talk through the situation and get individualized feedback. It is also important to remind you:

If a student may be in immediate danger, contact University Police by dialing 911 from a campus landline, or (631) 632-3333 from a cell phone or off-campus phone.

CAPS receives many calls each year from faculty and staff who are concerned about a student in distress. We want to continue being a resource for all members of the campus community.

For suggestions on when and how to refer students, please review the How to Help page. You are also encouraged to review the Stony Brook Red Book to learn about specific concerns.

Don't keep secrets when you are concerned about safety.

When a student and/or others may be at imminent risk, faculty and staff are required to contact University Police at 911 from a campus phone, or (631) 632-3333 from off-campus or cell phone. When there is concern about the safety of a student and/or others, but the student does not appear to be at imminent risk, faculty and staff are expected to report the situation to the CARE Team by calling 631-632-CARE (2273) or emailing care@stonybrook.edu.

Faculty are also expected to report to the Office of University Community Standards any disruptive behavior that interrupts their ability to teach or inhibits students' ability to learn.
