Enhancements in Finance and Administration

March 23, 2021

As we continue our work to address the systemic financial challenges that Stony Brook University faces, we must do so with a comprehensive and holistic approach. One component, which is well underway, is the work of the Strategic Budget Initiative to identify cost-savings, opportunities for new revenue streams, and strategic enablers that will propel us forward.  A second is updating and optimizing our finance and administrative functions to ensure that we are able to successfully navigate our way through the next few years.

Currently, our Finance and Administration functions are combined under one umbrella. I believe we can perform more effectively with a more distinct and dedicated focus on each of these quite different operational areas. To that end, I am making the following changes in the leadership and structure of Finance and Administration.

Kathy Byington will continue in her leadership role as Senior Vice President of Administration, with departments including Human Resources, Emergency Management and Police, Environmental Health and Safety, Parking and Transportation, and Facilities, among other services, reporting to her.  I am also pleased to announce that David Gray will be joining us as Interim Vice President for Budget and Financial Planning, with responsibilities for Accounting, Budgeting, Financial Planning and Procurement.  David most recently served as the Senior Vice President for Finance and Business at Penn State, a role he held for almost ten years.  David’s focus, in addition to leading the Finance team, will be to update our budgeting process to an “all funds” approach and support the introduction of new systems to strengthen our evolving financial management requirements.

Both positions will report to me and these changes are effective March 29, 2021.

Please join me in thanking Kathy for her continued service and welcoming David to Stony Brook.
