Quo Vadis European Union? The Spring  2019 Elections Will Give the European Union a New Parliament and Governance: Is a New European Union the Result?

Attendance at all proceedings is free and open to the public.

The objective of the conference is to examine the effectiveness of the functioning of the European Union vis-a-vis its member states as well as the relationship with other power blocs in the world, the extent to which external forces as well as changes within the political system of the member states have a bearing on the future of the Union.

Contributions in the form of scholarly papers as well as presentations by individuals with experience in the operation of the Union are solicited.


Institutional building within the European Union form the inception to the present.

Has the expansion of the Union affected its effectiveness?

Given the politics prevailing within the member states of the Union, what will be the effect of populism and nationalism?

Trade, Security, Development: relations with the USA, Russia and China. Migration, Global Warming, Anti-trust, Anti-protectionism.

To what extent has the concept of the Union evolved over time in the minds of citizens of the member states? How do these individuals see themselves vis-a-vis the Union.

Labor: workers’ mobility within, and migration into Europe. The need for work skills in the Union
People on the move: labor mobility and migration in Europe.

The tension between larger and more powerful states and smaller states, (e.g. the dominance of Germany and France and the role as well as the identity of the smaller states.

Can diplomacy suffice in dealing with external crisis? Role and structure of a potential common defense system.

The new Europe and diversity of religious systems. In particular, the tension between Christianity and Islam
