Research Interests

My general research interest include questions on the evolution of group life and social behavior, alloparental care, feeding ecology and feeding competition, predator-prey interactions, and reproductive strategies.

I have conducted laboratory research on South American callitrichine monkeys (Callithrix spp.) as well as fieldwork on Hanuman langurs (Semnopithecus entellus) in Nepal and on Phayre’s leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus phayrei crepusculus) in Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, Northeastern Thailand. Research questions center on costs and benefits of group life, ecology of social relationships, and reproductive strategies.

With support from NSF, data have been collected in Thailand on the weather, forest ecology, and behavior of 4 habituated groups of Phayre’s leaf monkeys. This includes: (i) temperature (since 2001) and rainfall (since 2003), (ii) forest composition (33 botanical plots, each 50x50 m), (iii) phenology (546 trees and lianas, checked monthly, 2004-2007), (iv) nutritional content and mechanical properties of more than 170 food items, (v) behavioral observations at the group (ranging, activity & heights via 30 min scan sampling; 2003-2007) and individual level (20 min focal sampling combining continuous and 1 min instantaneous recording), adult and juvenile individuals, since 2003), (vi) demography and life history, and (vii) genetics. Please contact Carola Borries or Andreas Koenig should you be interested to work with these data.
