Taking a Leave of Absence

If you plan to take a leave of absence from Stony Brook University, you must notify Visa and Immigration Services (VIS).

Step 1: Notify VIS

Follow these steps:

  1. Go to accessVIS: https://vis.stonybrook.edu
  2. Select Full Services and log in with your NetID and password
  3. Select F-1 Student Services from the left menu
  4. Complete and submit the Ending My F-1 Status eForm

In the form, include your planned departure date and flight information.

Step 2: Complete the University Process

You must also complete the university’s official withdrawal or leave of absence process.

  • Stopping attendance does not count as an official withdrawal
  • You remain responsible for tuition and fees until you complete the required process

Graduate Students
Submit the Request for Leave of Absence form. Review the Leave of Absence policy in the Graduate Catalog before submitting.

If you have questions about tuition or billing, contact Student Financial Services.

What Happens Next

When you submit this form:

  • Your SEVIS record will be ended for Authorized Early Withdrawal (AEW)
  • This action should not negatively affect your ability to return in a future semester
  • You will have a 15-day grace period to leave the United States
