Upcoming Changes to Visa Interview Waiver Policy
July 25, 2025The U.S. Department of State has announced significant changes to the visa interview
waiver program. Beginning September 2, 2025, most nonimmigrant visa applicants, including
those in F, J, and H-1B visa categories, will be required to attend an in-person interview
at a U.S. embassy or consulate.
What Is Changing?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of State expanded eligibility for visa interview waivers to reduce backlogs and support travel. This allowed many applicants, including F and J students, to renew visas without an in-person interview.
As of September 2, 2025:
- Interview waivers will be significantly limited
- Most applicants, including those renewing visas, must attend an in-person interview
- Previous flexibility for many F and J visa holders will no longer apply
Who Is Affected?
This change impacts most nonimmigrant visa applicants, including:
- F-1 and F-2 students and dependents
- J-1 and J-2 exchange visitors and dependents
- H-1B employees
These applicants will generally be required to attend an in-person visa interview, even for renewals.
Who May Still Qualify for an Interview Waiver?
Only limited categories may remain eligible, including:
- Diplomatic and official visa holders (e.g., A, G, NATO categories)
- Certain B-1/B-2 visa renewals, including Border Crossing Cards for Mexican nationals
Note: Age-based waivers (for applicants under 14 or over 79) will no longer be routinely available.
What This Means for You
- Plan ahead. Increased demand for interviews may lead to longer wait times and limited appointment availability.
- Expect longer processing times. Visa renewals may take more time due to required interviews and potential administrative processing.
- Applies to both new and renewal applicants. Even if you previously qualified for a waiver, you will likely need to attend an interview moving forward.
Next Steps
- Schedule your visa appointment as early as possible
- Review current appointment wait times at travel.state.gov
- Plan travel carefully and allow extra time for visa processing
