Name Changes

The name on your Form I-20 or DS-2019 must match the name on your passport.

If your legal name changes (first/given, middle, or last/family name), you must request an updated immigration document.

How to Report a Legal Name Change

Follow these steps in order:

  1. Update your passport
Contact your country’s embassy or consulate to update your passport with your new legal name.
  2. Update your name with the University
Submit the Registrar’s Name Change Form to update your name in university systems.
This ensures your name is correct on your:
    • Academic record
    • Transcript
    • Diploma
  3. Request an updated I-20 or DS-2019
After your name is updated with the Registrar, log in to accessVIS and submit the Immigration Document Update eForm.
Upload a copy of your updated passport.

VIS will issue a new Form I-20 or DS-2019 with your updated legal name.

Travel and Your Visa

Your F-1 or J-1 visa may still be valid if it shows your previous name.

  • You may continue to use a valid visa issued in your previous name
  • You must carry documentation of your legal name change when traveling (for example, a marriage certificate or court order)
  • Immigration officers may review both names at the U.S. port of entry

If your visa has expired, or if you want your visa to reflect your new name, you must apply for a new visa using your updated passport and immigration document.

University Records

You may be able to add a preferred name in university systems. This does not replace your legal name.
