Emergencies
In the event of an emergency evacuation, it is essential to proactively become familiar with the layout of your building, including all exit ways and stairs. Always use the closest exit to your location, and if applicable, know two ways out!
- If able to during an alarm, evacuate the building immediately.
- If you are not able to exit the building, you are encouraged to:
- Recruit the assistance of others to assist you during the evacuation if able/comfortable.
- Report to the nearest designated area of refuge - which would be the nearest stairwell landing - or shelter in place and remain in location if you cannot leave safely.
Once you have identified the safest option, you should call University Police at 631-632-3333 to notify them of your name, location, and that you cannot evacuate safely, as well as any other information that could be relevant to ensure their staff is able to support you.
You can also utilize the SB Guardian app on your mobile phone to support in any emergency. This app features a panic call and safety timer, and users have the option to add additional information to the app’s database, which can include allergies or special considerations that emergency responders should be aware of when responding.
In addition to understanding their options in the event of an evacuation, students, especially those residing on campus, are responsible for reviewing and understanding fire safety best practices. To review these expectations further, please review the video linked below.
If you have concerns with fire safety items in your building (including accessible equipment such as strobe lights and bed shakers), please contact the Residential Safety and Support team at campres_safety@stonybrook.edu or Fire and Emergency Services at EHSafety@stonybrook.edu to pass along the concerns.
For further information or questions, especially if they are unique to your situation, please contact our team at sasc@stonybrook.edu or Emergency_Operations_Center@stonybrook.edu. We are happy to assist and direct you appropriately.
