In order to park in campus parking facilities, all faculty and staff must purchase or register for a parking permit (regardless of work shift), or pay the hourly rate in a visitor facility.
Faculty and staff will use their NetID to access the parking portal to purchase or register for their parking permit. A faculty or staff member will
only see permits available to them. They will need their vehicle make, model, color
and license plate number. MAPS uses virtual permitting, which means the vehicle license
plate number is used to verify parking assignments.
Faculty/Staff will be able to register a maximum of 4 vehicles at a time. Vehicles
can be changed through the parking portal as needed
DAILY PARKING
Faculty and staff may park in an available visitor facility at the daily rate.
Staff are permitted to pay to park in the Hospital Garage, however it is highly discouraged, as it will impact visitor and patient parking.
How to Return a Permit
- Log in to the parking portal using your NetID
- Click permits
- Your active permit will show, click view
- Click "Cancel"
- Click "Submit Cancellation"
Users of a University-issued parking permit acknowledge responsibility to operate and park a vehicle on campus in accordance with Stony Brook University's Parking Rules and Regulations.
MAPS uses virtual permit parking. Parking assignments are verified using license plate recognition (LPR) technology. Every vehicle plate must be linked to a permit. Permit holders are free to register multiple vehicles.
- Only one (1) linked license plate per permit may be parked on campus at any given time.
- The license plate must face towards the drive aisle.
Things to keep in mind:
- All vehicles must be parked within the marked boundaries of one parking space or stall.
- Grid areas are not parking spaces.
- In gated facilities, individuals may not use their access card to allow someone else to enter and/or exit the facility. Access is for the permit holder only. Individuals that do so will be responsible for paying the applicable daily parking rate.
State Accessible Parking Permits available through county offices can be used on campus for the marked accessible parking spaces. Please note: parking in paid facilities requires payment of the applicable rate.
Faculty/staff that have a current government issued ADA placard, may gain access to closed facilities (e.g., East Campus) by following the below process.
- Log in to the parking portal
- Click Order Permits and agree to terms
- Select Medical Exception
- Enter or select vehicles
- Upload a copy of your government issued ADA placard and driver’s license
- Confirm
- Enter requested location and confirm
Accommodations for those without an ADA placard, as well as temporary accessible parking permits are available through the Office of Equity and Access. Email oea_ada@stonybrook.edu with your request.
FACULTY & STAFF “RED ZONE”
A faculty or staff member may apply for a parking permit as soon as university records show their status as active.
A Faculty/Staff "Red Zone" permit allows the permit holder to park in any designated faculty/staff parking areas on West, South and R&D Campuses, as well as in Lot 40. These permits are free of charge and are valid from July 1 through June 30. It is the responsibility of the faculty/staff member to log into the parking portal and register for a new permit prior to the July 1 activation date.
MAPS uses virtual permitting, which means the vehicle license plate number is used to verify parking assignments. The permit holder is responsible for ensuring vehicle information is kept current.
Faculty/Staff parking areas are enforced Monday-Friday from 7am-4pm. Outside of those hours, these lots are available for use by other types of permit holders without penalty.
GARAGE/GATED FACILITIES
The University has multiple garage and gated facilities. Currently, the only available facility is the Administration Garage located on West Campus. Waitlists for other facilities are available. New East Campus employees have the option of parking in Lot 40 with access to the HSC Garage evenings and weekends. For more information on this option, see our Lot 40 page.

PAID FACULTY/STAFF AND AFFILIATE PERMITS:
Permits will automatically renew until a cancellation request is received. Individuals are responsible for all charges assessed up to the time of cancellation. There are multiple options for payment depending on your category within the system.
PAYROLL DEDUCTION:
Individuals eligible for payroll deduction can select this option the first time a permit is purchased. Payments are split over 26 or 21 paychecks depending on employment status. Individuals are responsible for any deductions that cannot be taken from a check.
MONTHLY AUTO-RENEW:
Credit card payments can be one-time or set up as recurring.
-
- Paying each month: Payment is due on the 7th day of the month. If payment is not received by the 15th day of the month the permit will expire and will result in loss of access to the facility. After expiration of the permit, if parking is required, a new assigned location will be based on parking facility availability at the time of reinstatement of the parking permit.
- Recurring: All credit card numbers are tokenized and credit card information is not
stored in the system. Recurring payments will occur on the 2nd day of the month.
- Check or cash payments for monthly permits can be made at the Parking Office located in the Hospital Garage.
GATE ACCESS:
For gated facilities, a permit holder uses their SBU/SBUH ID to access their assigned facility. At the entry and exit gates wave the card across the entryway sensor. Please note: Your vehicle license plate is considered your permit, so make sure your vehicle information is always kept updated in the system. Any vehicles not linked to a permit may receive a parking citation.
WAITLIST FACILITIES:
Faculty, staff, and designated affiliates are eligible for placement on two waiting lists. When a waiting list exists, eligible individuals can go to the parking portal and place his/her name on the list. When a space becomes available in the parking facility, the individual on that list with the highest seniority date will be notified through email. Individuals who do not respond within the set period of time will be removed from the list. It is the responsibility of the individual to update contact information on file. The university reserves the right to move individuals outside of the waitlist policy when it is in the best interest of the university.
Joining a Waitlist:
- Log in to the parking portal.
- Click Order Permits
- For Life Sciences, click Join Waiting List next to the permit type
- For East Campus, select either Monthly Renewal or Payroll Deduction (if eligible)
- Click Join Waiting List for the locations you want to be added.
