Welcome to the Office of Emergency Management. Your safety and the security of the Stony Brook campus is our top priority. Because emergencies are unpredictable, being prepared is the best way to protect yourself and others.
Please familiarize yourself with our emergency procedures, campus alerts, and training programs below.
EMERGENCY CONTACT: Call 333 from any campus phone or (631) 632-3333 from a cell phone to reach University Police.
Evacuation
During an evacuation, stay calm and do not use the elevators.
-
West Campus: Use the nearest safe stairs to exit, and wait for instructions from emergency responders at your designated assembly area.
-
Health Sciences Center: If you hear fire alarm bells, evacuate down at least two floors via the nearest stairwell; occupants on Levels 1-5 should exit to the outside.
Severe Weather
Long Island is vulnerable to severe thunderstorms, blizzards, and even hurricanes. The University monitors these situations closely. For weather-related information, snow removal maps, or school closings, check the SB Advisory pages or call our weather hotlines at 632-SNOW or 444-SNOW.
Active Shooter
Active shooter situations are unpredictable, but taking immediate steps can protect you. If an incident occurs within your vicinity, remember three words: RUN. HIDE. FIGHT.. If the threat is not directly in your building, the University may activate Shelter-In-Place procedures. In this case, go to the nearest room, lock the door, turn off the lights, and stay away from windows.
Chemical Incident
Many everyday items on campus, from flammable liquids to pressurized gases, are considered hazardous. If you are involved in a hazardous materials spill, dial 333 immediately to reach University Police. Be prepared to provide the material type, amount released, and your exact location. Do not attempt to clean it up unless authorized.
Explosion / Bomb Threat
If you receive a bomb threat over the phone, remain calm, take note of the caller's voice and background noises, and keep them on the line by asking questions about the bomb's location and timing. If you discover a suspicious package or device, do not touch it. Evacuate the area, leave doors and windows open, and dial 333 immediately.
Outdoor Warning Siren
The main campus is equipped with an outdoor warning siren for weather emergencies and dangerous campus situations. If you hear the 60-second siren alert, remember S-O-S:
-
Stop what you are doing.
-
Observe your immediate surroundings for danger.
-
Shelter and seek additional information via SBAlert. A distinct 30-second discontinuous air horn tone will sound to signal an "All Clear".
Fire
If a fire occurs, activate the nearest fire alarm box and evacuate immediately. If there is smoke or heat, stay low to the ground. Before opening any doors, feel them near the top; if they are hot, keep them closed, place a wet blanket or article of clothing under the door to keep smoke out, and call University Police with your exact location.
Training & Outreach
We offer a variety of programs to keep Seawolves safe. Enhance your preparedness by joining the Safety Warden Program, taking Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) training, or registering for interactive discussions on recognizing workplace violence and active shooter threats.
