Policies & Procedures

All SBU students, faculty and staff are eligible for participation with a Campus Recreation Membership. If you do not know enough people to form a complete team, come to the Department of Campus Recreation for more information and/or you can attend the Manager's Meeting of that sport and find a team as a free agent at the meeting. Individuals as well as teams are encouraged to participate in intramurals. Teams are usually formed from residence hall floors, Greek organizations, student organizations, and often simply groups of friends.

Recognition of Inclusivity

Objective: Campus Recreation is committed to enhancing diversity through the inclusion of individuals, regardless of their age, ideas, perspectives, disability, ethnicity, gender identity, national origin, race, religious and spiritual beliefs, sex, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic and geographic background.

The University’s commitment to diversity is longstanding and reflects the essential function of a diverse community and plays in the furtherance of its role and mission as an equal opportunity institution. Given the historic and legal discrimination that has existed in American society, particular emphasis needs to be placed on the inclusion of individuals who are members of groups that have been excluded such as, racial/ethnic, sexual orientation, minorities, women in non-traditional areas, and persons with disabilities. Campus Recreation strives to recognize, affirm, and value its members for their role in a global community with greater understanding of their own and other cultures and perspectives.

Goal: Employees and Hiring

We will employ, develop and retain a student body in keeping with the mission of the University to provide access and opportunity to individuals from all segments of society and will create an effective work environment that benefits all members of the campus community. We will do so by collaborating with the appropriate people to develop responsive, sensitive strategies toward co-curricular advising with particular attention to the cultural and identity-related needs of students. Campus Recreation will continue to shape and maintain an environment designed to welcome, encourage, and embrace differences.

Current facility efforts:

  • Braille on facility door tags to indicate room numbers and staircase door signs that indicate stairwells
  • Two Gender Inclusive Restrooms
  • Two wheel chair ramps for emergency exits
  • Handicap automatic door buttons by entrance
  • Training of employees to ensure they service all individuals equally, accommodate for those who may need extra attention or services, and are aware of services such as CAPS, DSS, and Title IX
  • Ladies night to educate and empower women to stay healthy, practice self-defense and  work out
  • Zero tolerance policy and employee awareness of specific procedures to properly handle any occurrences
  • Individual’s participation in Intramural Sports based on their gender identity
