Michael Bernstein to Continue Tenure as Provost

May 27, 2020

To the Campus Community:

It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Michael Bernstein, who has been serving as interim President of Stony Brook University since August 1, 2019, will continue his tenure here as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs effective July 1, 2020.

I deeply appreciate the strong leadership Michael has demonstrated as Interim President. During this especially difficult time, he has met the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic with empathy and decisive action. Michael’s willingness to remain at Stony Brook for up to a year maintains continuity and ensures the stability of the planning process for the upcoming academic year.

Michael and I have already developed the foundations of a strong partnership and we will continue to work together to determine the next steps for the university. His wisdom and knowledge of all areas of this institution will be particularly useful as we begin the search for our Provost.

I also want to thank Dr. Minghua Zhang for taking on the role of interim Provost. He provided a steady hand and a thoughtful approach for the academic enterprise of Stony Brook University during this year of transition. I am most appreciative of his leadership and I look forward to working with him upon his return to the SOMAS faculty.

On behalf of the entire community, I’d like again to express my gratitude for all Michael has done to continue Stony Brook’s upward trajectory as one of the world’s most respected research universities.

Sincerely,
