Digital Accessibility Committment

April 7, 2022

Dear Faculty and Staff,

The past two years have illuminated the numerous benefits we derive from digital technology. In fact, many of these tools enabled us to continue teaching, learning, and working, during this time of great challenge; and our community is stronger for these efforts. Our entire enterprise is deeply committed to “provide comprehensive undergraduate, graduate, and professional education of the highest quality; ... while celebrating diversity and positioning the University in the global community.”

Stony Brook University has a longstanding history of proactively ensuring equal and integrated access to our community for persons with disabilities. The University remains committed to ensuring that all of our programs and services are accessible, and delivered in an inclusive and effective manner. In addition to being a campus that is physically welcoming and accessible, Stony Brook recognizes that Digital technology is also a critical component of how we engage and communicate with our students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Today we are proud to announce that Stony Brook University is taking the next step to ensure equity for all by adopting our Digital Accessibility Policy. This policy formalizes our digital Accessibility Program and combines efforts across the campus to ensure that we continue to provide a digital environment that is accessible to persons with disabilities. It establishes the need for all senior leadership to work towards increasing the digital accessibility of our programs and services. This policy also recognizes that each campus community member has a role to play in contributing to an accessible experience for all. We encourage you to review the policy and the resources available on Stony Brook’s Accessibility Website. As our accessibility program matures you will be invited to participate in ways relevant to your roles and responsibilities. Please look out for additional details to follow from the Office of Equity and Access.

We very much appreciate your commitment to this valuable initiative, and thank you in advance for your participation. Now more than ever, it is imperative that we ensure that all students, faculty, and staff can participate in our programs regardless of ability or circumstances.
