We Are Here for You – Support Resources for the Campus Community

March 2, 2022

Over the past two years, we have survived unprecedented challenges, and the Russia-Ukraine crisis has triggered a fresh wave of uncertainty across the U.S. and here at Stony Brook, where our global community is experiencing the same pain, shock, and frustration as the rest of the world. We also have students, faculty, and staff members suffering on a more personal level, with their families living in the impacted regions.

In the midst of tragic losses – and unease over how events may develop in the weeks and months to come –  we want you to know you’re not alone. If you are stressed and concerned, please remember that the University has services and resources available for you during this difficult time and programs that can help you sort through feelings of distress, anxiety, fear, and anger.

FOR STUDENTS

Resources:
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers free and confidential services to enrolled students, including crisis intervention, counseling and consultation services, medication management, and assistance with referrals to community resources.

The Center for Prevention and Outreach (CPO) provides students and the campus community with prevention, early intervention, education, and outreach services around public health concerns impacting college students, including substance abuse, mental health, and sexual and interpersonal violence.

The Student Support Team can help you connect with appropriate resources on campus and assist you if you have any challenges or concerns. The team can be reached at (631) 632-7320 or student_supportteam@stonybrook.edu

Special Programs/Services:

  • Every Tuesday at 3 p.m., join us at the CPO office in Union 108 for Global Minds Alliance, a dedicated student drop-in space supporting global students' mental health, well-being, and success at SBU. This month we will be focusing on the current turmoil in the world and providing a supportive space to connect.
  • If you would like to connect for a brief conversation with a counselor, register for a Let’s Talk session, offered every day.
  • CAPS offers individual counseling services, by phone, Zoom, or in-person depending on your preference. For an initial consultation, call (631) 632-6720 between the hours of 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and ask to speak with a counselor. You can also schedule a consultation online here. CAPS also offers a variety of groups (click here for list) for students interested in connecting and talking with other students about a number of different mental health topics.
  • After business hours, you can speak with a CAPS After Hours counselor by dialing (631) 632-6720 and pressing 2, anytime day or night.

FOR FACULTY/STAFF

Resources:
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides a voluntary, confidential, and comprehensive worksite-based program designed to enhance the overall well-being of faculty, staff, and the organization, providing safe, inclusive, and supportive spaces.

Healthier U educates, encourages, and empowers employees to make healthy decisions and lifestyle choices, while enhancing Stony Brook University’s sense of community, and culture of health and wellness.

Support Resources for Stony Brook Medicine (SBM) Employees (accessible through ThePulse). In addition to EAP and Healthier U, resources for SBM employees include spiritual and health care teams, support hotlines, daily mindfulness meditation sessions, and Resilience at The Brook offerings.

Special Programs:

  • Employees are invited to join a conversation series from Healthier U, "Resilience in Uncertain Times," offered virtually via Zoom on the following dates: Wednesday, March 9, at 3 p.m.; Tuesday, March 15, at 2 p.m.; and Thursday, March 24, at 10 a.m. Register here.
  • Employees seeking confidential, individual support and resources are encouraged to reach out to the Employee Assistance Program by calling (631) 632-6085 or emailing eap@stonybrook.edu
