Christina Bae (Awardee for Korean Studies Minor Scholarship)

Hello! My name is Christina Bae and I am a fourth-year student majoring in Health Science with a minor in Korean Studies. As a Korean American who has spent the younger half of my life in Korea, I definitely am familiar with a lot of the Korean culture and how Korea works; however, the hopes of keeping up with the Korean culture outside of Korea and the want of connecting with people that also have similar interests were always there. Through the pursuit of the Korean Studies minor, I’m grateful that I was able to make a lot of unique friendships that I will forever cherish and I hope to make many more in the future to share the Korean side of my culture with.

Xiyi Lin (Awardee for Korean Studies Minor Scholarship)

Hi everyone! My name is Xiyi Lin, a senior double-majoring in AMS and ECO and minoring in Korean Studies. Driven by great interest in Korean culture, especially 힙합, I began my learning journey upon entering the university. Whether it was the online learning environment without fact-to-fact connections or in-person activities after the pandemic, I was always passionate about the language and the culture through interactions with my classmates coming from different majors and countries. It is so grateful for me to join this Korean Studies family where I have felt unprecedented unity and amity, and I am looking forward to bring this treasure with me for my next journey.

Namyoung Um (Awardee for Korean Studies Minor Scholarship)

Hi, my name is Roxie Um, and I am a senior with double majors in Linguistics and Asian and Asian American Studies - Korean Teaching Education and a minor in Korean Studies. I have TAed in Korean classes for three semesters and got interested in the Korean teaching field. Luckily, I could also join the NSLI-Y program as a Residential Director and Teaching Assistant in Summer 2022. I love helping students/friends learning Korean, and I feel proud when I see their improvement. My goal is to become a Korean teacher in a Secondary school, and I want to dedicate myself to spreading the Korean language and culture in the United States as a Korean teacher.

Martin Kordas (Awardee for Korean Studies Minor Scholarship)

Hello! My name is Martin Kordaś, and I am a fifth-year student majoring in Business Management and Asian & Asian Americans Studies, with a double minor in Korean Studies and Japanese Studies. My interest in Korea blossomed in high school and since meeting many Korean friends in college I decided to formally study the language and culture of Korea and I have not looked back since. My mother country and Korea share a similar history which has made learning about Korea all the more meaningful to me. I have learned to love Korean food, history, culture, and language and I hope many others can as well.

Cynthia Zhu (Awardee for Korean Teacher Education Scholarship)

My name is Cynthia Zhu, a senior participating in the Korean Teacher Education program as well as the Korean Studies minor program. Thanks to various opportunities kindly provided by instructors, I have enriched my knowledge on pedagogical practices and the Korean language and culture through these diverse experiences, in hopes of applying them to future classrooms. Besides relevant Korean courses taken in the past three years, I have also investigated college Korean language learners’ experiences with online resources, and engaged in teaching assistant positions in both Stony Brook University and South Korea.

All awardees have demonstrated academic excellence and a strong commitment to the promotion of Korean Studies and Korean culture at Stony Brook. Please join us to congratulate the awardees.
