Intensive English Program (IEP)

  • SEMESTER

    Fall/Spring Semester

The IEC courses prepare students for attending university in the United States by enhancing their academic language skills.  Students receive instruction in critical thinking, essay writing, making oral presentations, note-taking, and comprehending academic lectures.

    IEC Courses & Components

IEC courses at each level have multiple components:

    Integrated Academic English
Core IEC courses focusing on reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

    Enrichment Classes
Includes Grammar, Pronunciation, and level-specific classes such as Prepare for Success at SBU, American Culture, Idioms & Conversation.

    Chat Room
Sign up for individual or small group meetings with peer mentors for conversation practice.  You will be introduced to extra-curricular activities such as clubs, recreation, sports, and other events that enhance college life.

At the end of each session, students receive a certificate of completion.

    Placement

After comprehensive testing during the first week of the program, students are placed into an appropriate level.

The IEC may offer classes at different levels depending on enrollment.  It is recommended that students have at least 3 years of English in order to be placed in the low intermediate level.

*Please note: The high-beginner and low intermediate levels of IEC courses are not offered at this time, as the majority of the students enter the program with high intermediate or advanced level of English proficiency.
