Professor Schoonen's research interests focus on the reactivity of earth materials under a wide range of conditions.  He is currently on leave from SBU and leads part of nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL).  While mostly in a management role at BNL, he is actively working on the application of synchrotron-based analytical techniques to the study of a wide range of earth materials.  Recent work at BNL’s National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II) has focused on the elemental composition of aerosols collected in Mexico City and off the coast of China.  The main focus in to understand the chemical speciation of lead, iron, and zinc in these aerosols, which has public health implications.   Schoonen is collaborating with Professors Hurowitz, McLennan and Thieme to explore the use of NSLS-II for the analysis of returned samples from Mars.
