Research Description:

Baosheng Li’s research is aimed at understanding the composition and dynamical processes in the interior of the Earth by conducting experimental and computational studies on minerals and rocks at extreme pressure and temperature conditions. Research activities in experimental studies involve the use of various tools and techniques, such as ultrasonic interferometry, X-ray diffraction and imaging, Infrared and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microscopic analysis (EPMA), multi-anvil high pressure apparatus, and diamond anvil cells. Complementary to experimental studies, Baosheng Li also incorporates first principles calculations using commercial software (WIEN2K, VASP, CASTEP) to help understand the physics of the experimental results at atomistic scales. Baosheng Li led the ultrasonic research program and pioneered the technique based on ultrasonic interferometry for sound velocity measurement of mantle minerals in multi-anvil apparatus at high pressure and high temperature. These experimentally determined sound velocities can be used to compare with those from seismic data to place constraints on the mineralogical composition, temperature, and heterogeneities at various depths of the Earth interior.
