"Beyond the Model: Scaling Applied AI for Water and Resource Recovery"
Abstract:
The water and resource recovery sectors are rapidly adopting digital technologies and AI-based decision support. Applications range from reducing energy, chemical consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions to improving treatment performance, equipment maintenance, infrastructure management, leak detection, and resource recovery. At the same time, emerging approaches such as agentic AI, hybrid AI and physical models, and digital twins are creating new opportunities to augment the capabilities of operators and engineers. But realizing the value of AI requires more than building a model. It requires reliable data, scalable digital infrastructure, integration with operational systems, and approaches that users can trust and incorporate into day-to-day decision-making. Advances in cloud computing and AI are making these capabilities increasingly accessible to facilities of different sizes. This talk will explore how water and resource recovery facilities can move from data collection and visualization to applied AI at scale. Through practical examples and use cases, it will examine what is being deployed today, lessons from real-world implementation, and near-term opportunities emerging from the rapid evolution of AI.
About the Speaker:
Nina Kshetry is Founder and President of Ensaras, Inc., a company providing data management and artificial intelligence solutions for water, wastewater, and resource recovery facilities through its AI-as-a service platform, the Ensaras AI Wastewater Stack. The platform helps facilities digitize and streamline data collection, visualize and analyze operational data, automate reporting and alerting, and apply AI-generated insights and agentic AI workflows to plant operations and equipment maintenance. She is also Co-founder and Vice President of Circle H2O, a wastewater resource recovery engineering and project management firm. She has two decades of experience spanning water and wastewater treatment, engineering, data analytics, and applied AI, and has worked globally to design, build, and operate dozens of wastewater resource recovery plants. She received her S.B. and S.M. degrees in environmental engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is a licensed professional engineer in Illinois and Florida, and a 2024 Presidential Leadership Scholar.
