Admissions

The Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University provides a rigorous foundation in the engineering sciences, preparing graduates for immediate entry into professional practice across fields such as structural, geotechnical, environmental, and transportation engineering. The curriculum balances advanced coursework in mathematics and the physical sciences with a core set of engineering disciplines, emphasizing the use of modern design software and the integration of technical solutions with economic constraints. Accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (http://www.abet.org), the program ensures that students meet the high global standards required for professional licensure and leadership in the infrastructure and construction industries.

Bachelor of Engineering: Apply Now!

The Accelerated BE/MS Program at Stony Brook University is an elite academic track designed for high-achieving Civil Engineering students who are currently enrolled. This is an opportunity to earn both their Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Science degrees in just five years. By allowing students to double-count up to six graduate credits toward both degree requirements, the program significantly reduces the time and financial investment typically required for an advanced degree. Students generally apply during the spring of their junior year and must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 to qualify for this streamlined transition. This condensed timeline enables graduates to enter the professional workforce sooner with a master’s degree, providing a distinct competitive advantage for leadership roles and specialized engineering positions.

Acceptance into the Major

Qualified freshman and transfer applicants who indicate an interest in Civil Engineering may be admitted directly to the major or as a pre-major. Pre-majors are enrolled in the Area of Interest (AOI) program; to be eligible for the degree, these students must formally apply for and be admitted to the major. Students currently enrolled in other programs within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) follow the same admission process as AOI students. Conversely, students from outside of CEAS and those seeking a double major may apply via a separate competitive process.

Academic Integrity: Intellectual honesty is a cornerstone of scholarly work at Stony Brook. The department reserves the right to table any application for major or minor admission until any pending academic judiciary matters are resolved. An active judiciary matter is typically identified by a grade of "Q" on the student’s record.

Area of Interest (AOI) and CEAS Students

(Excluding double major applicants)

Applications for major admission from AOI and current CEAS students are reviewed twice annually. Deadlines are January 5 for Spring admission and June 5 for Fall admission. Students who submit a timely application will be admitted provided they meet the following criteria:

  • Credit Requirement: Completion of at least 10 credits in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering courses required for the major (excluding EST 392, ESE 301, and CME 233).

  • GPA Standard: A minimum 3.2 GPA in all major-applicable math, science, and engineering courses (excluding EST 392, ESE 301, and CME 233), with no more than one grade below a B-.

  • Academic Progress: No repeated courses among those required for the major.

  • Transfer Evaluations: Completion of formal course evaluations for all transfer credits intended to meet major requirements.

Timeline Constraints:

Students must fulfill these requirements within one year of enrolling in their first major-applicable course. Applications must be submitted by the deadline immediately following the completion of these requirements. AOI or CEAS students who apply after this one-year limit will be evaluated under the more competitive "Non-CEAS" process described below.

Non-CEAS Students and Double Major Applicants

Applications from students outside of CEAS and those pursuing a double major are reviewed twice per year, with deadlines of January 5 (Spring) and June 5 (Fall). Applicants who do not meet the standard AOI requirements listed above will not be considered. Please note that fulfilling the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance; admission is highly competitive and contingent upon departmental program capacity.

Transferring Credits

The Academic and Transfer Advising Services (ATAS) maintains Transfer Equivalency | Academic and Transfer Advising Services, a comprehensive resource listing courses from other institutions that have been deemed equivalent to Stony Brook’s curriculum. To ensure transfer credits appear on their official record, students must submit the required documentation to ATAS. For any courses not currently listed in the database, students are required to complete applicable Transfer Credit Evaluation Forms | Academic and Transfer Advising Services form. This process involves obtaining a signature from the department corresponding to the subject of the course taken, followed by final processing by the ATAS office.
